The winner of the 17th edition of the L’Oréal-UNESCO Talent Programme for Women in Science is already known. The three female scientists who most impressed the jury with their projects will receive a prize of 200,000 CZK and media publicity for their work. This year’s laureates also include geneticist Veronika Vymetálková from the Department of Molecular Biology of Cancer. This is the third significant award in the last two years for her. In addition to the L’Oréal-UNESCO award, she is also a laureate of the Minister’s Prize for Medical Research and Development and the Prize for Outstanding Research, Experimental Development and Innovation of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Vymetálková is involved in cancer research at the mRNA level, researching new possibilities for early diagnosis and treatment of cancer – especially colorectal cancer. It is paradoxical that, although she has dedicated her life to cancer research, she has recently experienced the disease. As she says: “This disease has given me more than it has taken and is a huge motivation for me to continue my research“.

We would like to congratulate Veronika and wish her many more scientific successes, and especially good health because that is the most important thing in life!
