They are devising ways to make computers much more powerful and thus accelerate the development of new medicines. They are researching how to stop cancer. They are teaching computers to see and understand images better than humans. Others are teaching robots to understand people. They are finding out how the online world is changing our sex lives. They understand the language of pigs. These are just a few of the areas the top female scientists from this year’s Forbes – Top Women in Science (open in a new window – only available in Czech) selection are researching.

This year’s Forbes top female scientists also include a molecular biologist and geneticist, Veronika Vymetálková, head of the Department of Molecular Biology of Cancer! Her success is also the success of the entire team, which is pushing the boundaries of cancer research. Congratulations!

Profile

Veronika Vymetálková, Ph.D.

A laureate of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science award. She studies cancer and its treatment. Ironically, she herself has battled with this disease. She is interested in researching genetic and molecular changes in tumours, particularly in colorectal cancer. Simply put, she studies the “genetic fingerprint” of cancer cells to help scientists better understand why some people develop cancer while others do not. She also investigates why the disease returns in some people and why treatment works for some but not for others.
