On Saturday, September 13, geneticist and biologist Helena Fulková presented at the Triangl multi-genre festival (open in a new window – only available in Czech), where she introduced visitors to the latest findings in reproductive biology research. These results may contribute to developing new diagnostic and therapeutic methods in reproductive medicine in the future.
We would like to thank Dr. Fulková for her excellent representation of the IEM CAS and for sharing her findings with the general public. We would also like to thank the festival organisers for the invitation and the opportunity to participate, which we greatly appreciate.
For those who missed the lecture, here are the main points of her presentation:
- The ageing of sex cells does not only affect women – the age of 35 is a crucial milestone for both sexes.
- Research focused on oocytes has shown that the problem is not only the increased incidence of aneuploidy (such as trisomy leading to Downs syndrome).
- A new study on an animal model has demonstrated effective DNA repair in oocytes for the first time globally.
- At the same time, it is only the second study in the world to confirm the possibility of effective “rejuvenation” of oocytes.
