Yesterday, the CAS Press Department organised a breakfast with journalists at the Ponrepo Café on the topic of the Use of AI in science and research. The main part of the programme was a presentation by selected guests and scientists of the CAS, including Iva Švecová from the Microscopy Service Unit, who shared with journalists her experience with the use of ChatGPT technology in the development of new software for 3D reconstruction of microscopic images. This innovative tool will allow scientists to analyse detailed microscopy data and produce more accurate results. The journalists appreciated the practical examples and the lively discussion on using AI in real scientific projects.
Using AI in science and research provides new opportunities to accelerate discoveries and increase the efficiency of research processes. Although AI has many advantages, it unfortunately also has its negatives. One of them is energy consumption. Data centres have a significant impact on carbon footprint, mainly due to the high energy required to run servers and cool them. With the growing demand for cloud services, AI, streaming data and internet services, this issue is becoming more and more pressing.
