The brain is a complex organ that controls our thinking, memory, emotions, touch, motor skills, vision, breathing, temperature, and much more. Put simply, it is an incredibly powerful supercomputer that drives everything we do and who we are. Although it weighs only 1.5 kg on average, about 2% of our body weight, it uses 20% of our total energy. The brain is about 60% fat, and the remaining 40% is a combination of water, protein, carbohydrates and salts. It contains blood vessels and nerves, including neurons and glial cells (approximately 100 billion nerve cells).
In short, the human brain is simply an incredibly complex organ that never stops to fascinate us. If you want to find out more about this amazing structure, you now have a unique opportunity. Today, the 25th edition of the Week of the Brain festival has begun, bringing news from the field of neuroscience. You can look forward to many exciting lectures, exhibitions and workshops.
