When we say scientist, many people think of a silent figure in a laboratory, immersed in graphs, pipettes and scientific papers. But real science – and the people who make it – are much more diverse.
We are happy to boast about the success of our colleague Monika Kubísková, a neuroscientist and PhD student in Neuroscience at the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of Charles University, who is the first female scientist to compete in the final ten of Miss Czech Republic 2025!
This connection may surprise you at first. But that’s what we’re talking about. Being a scientist does not mean giving up femininity, public space, or the courage to be seen.
Monika works at the Department of Cellular Neurophysiology of the IEM CAS, where she researches two serious diseases – amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and glioblastoma, diagnoses that still have no effective treatment and which remain a big challenge for modern science and medicine. Her work contributes to a better understanding of what happens in the brain in these diseases.
And now, she is also contributing to something else: the visibility of science, women in science, and the courage to be oneself outside the lab. Her journey is extraordinary, and her message is all the more important: Science, like a beauty contest, can be for everyone! And we are proud to support her on this journey!
If you’re interested in her story, we’d be grateful if you’d vote on the Miss Czech Republic website (open in a new window – only available in Czech).
